Red deer hunting in Slavonia
Hunting in Europe’s largest oak forest brings us closer to the essence and the
primal meaning of hunting.
In eastern Croatia, within the floodplains of the Sava, Bosut, and Spačva rivers, lies the largest lowland complex of floodplain oak forests in Europe, spanning 47,000 hectares, of which 30,000 hectares are managed as a hunting ground.
The area is divided into forestry compartments of approximately 800 × 800 m, separated by forest tracks and rides. Within these compartments are marshland clearings, some maintained by mowing and equipped with high seats and feeding stations for game. The red deer population is estimated at around 600 animals, with an annual harvest of about 140 stags and hinds. Trophy stag hunting takes place exclusively during the rut (September 1–15), when no management culling is performed.
Mature trophy stags in this area are typically 8–10 years old, with antlers scoring 170–200 CIC points and weighing 6–9 kg. These trophies are particularly prized for their deep dark-brown color and well-developed crowns. Hunting success during a four-day stay averages 85–90%.

Although game density is high, the hunt here is anything but easy. With no large meadows to serve as permanent rutting grounds, hinds roam widely in search of acorns and grazing, while stags follow them, shifting their rutting activity from one forestry compartment to another. This creates a challenging, highly dynamic style of hunting.Stalking a roaring stag usually means moving silently through dense oak forest or cutting across its path of travel. Success depends on the hunter’s approach, wind direction, ability to spot and assess game in cover, and skill to deliver a precise shot under such demanding conditions.
The chances increase with the guidance of experienced local hunters, who apply traditional methods practiced for centuries—where a hidden hind, a sudden change in wind, or the snap of a twig often decides the outcome.
It is not unusual for hunters to cover up to 10 km in a single outing. Despite flat terrain and forest paths, this requires solid physical condition. For those who have experienced it, hunting in these oak forests ranks among the most intense and rewarding hunting adventures.
When guest and guide fully immerse themselves in the pursuit and find the right “chemistry,” the hunt is remembered not for the shot itself, but for the feeling of having come closer to the essence and primeval spirit of hunting.
