Red deer hunting in Croatia

Croatian trophy

Since the adoption of the evaluation formula in 1954, results from world trophy exhibitions and CIC archives have consistently shown that Croatia is among the leading destinations for exceptional red deer trophies from natural hunting grounds. A fine example of this genetic continuity is the stag taken in Baranja in 2021 by a Lovag guest, whose antlers were scored at an impressive 265.72 CIC points. In Croatia, trophy prices are determined according to the CIC scoring system (Conseil International de la Chasse et de la Conservation du Gibier). To help guests who are not familiar with the CIC evaluation system compare Croatian price lists with those based on antler weight, Lovag price lists provide very precise weight ranges alongside each point category. When considering prices, we strongly recommend taking these weight data into account, as they clearly show that Croatian hunting grounds are highly competitive for red deer trophies up to the 8 kg category. Beyond trophy value, Croatia’s natural environment also rewards hunters with the quality of the hunting experience itself. Hunters here enjoy constant encounters with red deer, which typically move during daylight hours when they can be observed, evaluated, and harvested in full accordance with hunting ethics. The rutting season, hunting conditions, and methods vary depending on the location of the hunting ground. For instance, while the rut in eastern Croatia has usually ended by late September, in the mountainous areas just 300 kilometers to the west it is only beginning. This diversity gives hunters in Croatia the unique opportunity to choose the type of hunting experience that suits them best.

The hunting season for stags runs from August 15 to February 16; for hinds from August 31 to January 16; and for calves from August 31 to March 1. The annual cull for all categories is about 7,000 head of game. Every hunting rights holder is obliged to maintain prescribed game stocks in their hunting grounds and to comply with the annual cull broken down by number and management category.

Driven hunts are prohibited, and the trophy of any harvested animal must be scored according to the CIC (Conseil International de la Chasse et de la Conservation de la Gibier) formula. Because of this, in Croatia, the price of trophy hunting depends on the number of CIC points. Most European hunters, unfamiliar with the CIC scoring system, are unable to compare Croatian price lists with those based on antler weight (e.g., Poland, Hungary), which places the Croatian hunting offer at a disadvantage. For this reason, Lovag’s price lists include not only CIC value categories but also the corresponding weight categories, calculated from scoring a very large number of red deer in Croatia. Comparisons show that in Croatia, the prices for trophy animals above 8 kg are slightly higher than in competing destinations. This partly results from differences in weighing methods (dry/wet), but also from recent research showing that antlers of a given weight category in Croatia score higher in CIC points than antlers of the same weight category in most hunting destinations in Europe. The biological and genetic potential of red deer in Croatia’s most renowned hunting grounds allows for the use of lower harvesting ages, meaning that at the time of the hunt, the antler features affecting trophy attractiveness (crown shape, number and length of tines, spread) are near their maximum, even if weight has not yet reached its peak.

Many hunting grounds are highly rated, covering areas of 10,000 – 40,000 hectares and located in sparsely populated regions of Croatia. This provides the game with the necessary peace, natural daily movement and feeding cycles, herd formation, and the maintenance of numerous healthy populations — further supported by the uninterrupted exchange of genes along the age-old east–west migration corridor shared with hunting grounds in Slovenia, Hungary, and Serbia.
